Not much news today, but this is pretty cool. mewse somehow learned that the chainsaw from Doom was not drawn from scratch as I had always assumed, but instead was based on a real chainsaw owned by one Tom Hall, who helped design Doom, and is now working on Anachronox. Lucas Davis of ION Storm was kind enough to send along two pictures of the model for one of the most famous melee weapons ever. You can click the images to see a larger version.

    Hacx Patch Soon

    By Mordeth, in News,

At the Hacx news site (which has been refusing to load for me these past days, btw) there's word about several bugs found in the recently released free v1.1 Hacx TC. These are a visplane overflow on map18 and a switch between map14-15 which makes the secret exit lead to map01 instead. A patch for this will be released "in the near future".

    EDGE v1.24 Released

    By Mordeth, in News,

There has been a new release of the Doom source port EDGE tonight, bringing it up to version 1.24. According to the email we got "the two most important changes are support in Linux using the SDL as well as basic X plus libGGI, with the new demo pages", as well as fixing several bugs. The DOS and Windows binaries as well as the Linux source have been mirrored at our source port section as usual.

    Hacx 3D

    By Mordeth, in News,

This is a bit off-topic here, but Nostromo has written down the history of Hacx 3D, the 3D engine sequal to the original Doom2 add-on which died during development. The article is spruced up with lots of screenshots, several of which I can't remember seeing before.

    New Skulltag Beta

    By Linguica, in News,

Carnevil has released beta II of Skulltag, his ZDoom-based multiplayer/botmatch mod. As he says, "this one actually works." Bots will no longer crash the game randomly, no extra command lines are needed to run the beta, the skin WADs are now built-in, and a detailed tutorial on how to make a CTF level has been included. Also, this beta version is based off ZDoom 1.22, whereas the old version was based off of ZDoom 1.18b.
