Also, for a single map, Community Chest 2's 24th map 'The Mucus Flow' is without a doubt one of my favorite maps ever. The attrition forces a very strategic play style. The aesthetics and music are fantastic too.

I've played a lot of megaWADs. Probably more than I remember... I'll take a stab at ranking them, though. First, I'll chuck mine in here, just to get them out of the way:

Doom II: 25 Years on Earth (One Year Late Edition) - I modelled this on my favourites, so it would score highly
Persephone (Volumes 1-3) - it's my "best of" compilation, so of course I like it, but it's not particularly coherent and the enforced pistol starting reflects that
Scourge - this would land significantly lower than the other two on the full list

Now then, onto ones that I remember that I've played... May not remember them well, but I'll take notes to explain myself where things seem out of order to the majority. It's also worth noting that any ending in an IoS final level probably didn't get beaten properly:

The Alfonzone (another one that I just couldn't stick with, despite initial interest)

TNT: Revilution (I didn't get far in this before losing interest)
Unholy Realms (didn't finish it - got about halfway in before getting very bored)
Doom Zero (I didn't get into this, despite beating about a third of it)
Eviternity (didn't finish it - got about 7 maps in before getting bored)
Interception (another one I didn't get very far into)
Stronghold: On The Edge of Chaos (not my sort of thing at all on any difficulty, in it's final form. A shame, as I liked it early in development)

Ordering is mostly on how I feel in hindsight, with it more being areas than a definitive ranking.

I'm sure there's a load I can't remember all over that list (particularly Episodes for Doom 1). If we were including single maps and shorter map sets (like Doom II Episodes), the list would be about 10x the length and the ZDCMPs would be squarely at the top, with a lot of DBPs in and around that top area as well.

I do feel like I went off-topic a bit there, as I just tried to list and rank every megaWAD I’ve ever played. That first 15 or so are probably my favourites, although I’m not sure I’d want Scythe at #1 still. I’d really need to replay a lot of them to have any idea of if my opinion holds...

Instead of resurrecting this nine month old thread, I would recommend to check out this thread (which is still alive and pretty much the biggest "top/favorite wad" thread on DW):

You can give points (you have up to 55 points to allocate any way you wish, with a maximum of 10 points for any particular release) to your favorite wads there.

Its a good thing I keep a folder full of stuff that I have played. (I hope no one minds that many of these on this list are not first time playthroughs, and also that many, if not most, were not released in the last 4 years.))

1) No End In Sight - Still my fave megawad of all time. A classic, haunting Ultimate Doom megawad. The best vanilla has to offer.

2) Eviternity. Needs no introduction at this point

3) SIGIL.wad. Perhaps needs even less introduction that Eviternity. Perhaps.

4)Alien Vendetta. Somehow needs even less than no introduction. These days I do find the last 10 levels a bit of a grind, but Simply superb.

5) REKKR.wad - Took a little to get me into this, but once I was in, it was wonderful. Especially the little dog that follows you around. if you can find it. :)

6) SINERGY.wad - another wonderful full Ultimate Doom replacement. (Writing this list makes me realise I should have kept the readme files as well as just the wads themselves.)

7) Back to Basics by Espi. I keep coming back to this one. Superbly clean yet intricate design. Perfectly captures the essence of Classic Doom - but with more exploring, secrets, and wonderful areas to explore.

8)TNT Revilution. Even though I was involved in this one, I never actually played it until a year or two ago. One of my favorite Megawads, and with an interesting icon fight for once.

9) kssht.wad Another full megawad for Doom2. Khorus' work is reminiscent of Espi's clean and classic layouts. Highly recommended.

10) Sunlust.wad. Played this when it first came out, played it again a couple years ago. Widely known for a reason. Tough and beautiful to look at, worth it if you like harder maps.

11) PL2.wad Plutonia sequel. Every bit as good as the original. Perhaps even better. As good as Vanilla megawads get.

12) PRCP.wad Another awesome Plutonia sequel. I think some of the maps are even better than many in PL2, but PL2 overall gets the higher place.

13) Going Down. I love Doom wads with storylines, and interesting scenarios. And here we are with a wonderful yet tough set of fights.

14)CyberDreams. Been meaning to play this for years. Finally got to it. Loved it. Quirky and interesting, and hard. Very clever ideas, well executed.

15) 3IAC.wad - 3 is a crowd. Awesome Limit Removing ((iirc) Megawad. great stuff.

16)DoomZero.wad Another wonderful Doom2 megawad, this one an official release. I am running out of superlatives. This was great.

17)alt.wad Another wonderful Doom2 megawad. As unique as it gets. Story driven, really is completely its own thing.

18)ph_25yoe.wad Phobus's perhaps magnum opus? Another wonderful megawad, with great continuity between the levels.

19) Reverie.wad by Valkiriforce. Deserves a higher place, but here we are. Another one of those wonderful vanilla megawads that I keep coming back to.

20)Sinedie.wad by didy. Possibly my favorite not-a-megawad level set ever

edit- Should be in my top 20, but I thought of them after the fact.

20a) Lunar Catastrophe. Another superb Ultimate Doom full megawad.

20b) Hellbound. Yet another brilliant, story driven megawad, full of suspense and wonder.

Clearly from this list, I learned that vanilla-ish megawads, or megawads with a clear story and "universe" work well for me.

Minor thing: I don't like being limited to 55 points because I don't have the heart to take away the existing points I've already given to some of my favorite wads in that thread, even though there are plenty of other wads I'd love to mention. I still really like the thread for all the work that goes into sorting the list, but having a "free-for-all" thread seems harmless to me.
